White or a little buff fine crystal. The relative molecular weight is 69.0 and density is 2.168. It is unscented with a little saline taste, easy to be deliquescenced and to dissolve in water. The melting point is 271 land decomposition temperature is 320笆.It has property ofoxidability and reducibility. It can be slowly oxidized into sodium nitrite in the air, and become diamino compound composed with ammonia under low temperature.
It is mainly used as the production raw material of nitro-compound and azo dyes, etc. It is also used as mordant and bleacher for fabric dyeing, as well as metal heat treatment agent, early-strength admixture and antifreeze of cement.

物理性质
白色至浅黄色粒状、棒状或粉末。有吸湿性。溶于1.5份冷水、0.6份沸水,微溶于乙醇。相对密度2.17。熔点271℃。
化学性质
其水溶液呈碱性,属强氧化剂又有还原性,
在空气中会逐渐氧化,表面则变为硝酸钠,加热至320℃以上分解,也能被氧化剂所氧化;遇弱酸分解放出棕色二氧化氮气体;与有机物、还原剂接触能引起爆炸或燃烧,并放出有毒的刺激性的氧化氮气体;遇强氧化剂也能被氧化,特别是铵盐,如与硝酸铵、过硫酸铵等在常温下,即能互相作用产生高热,引起可燃物燃烧。有氧化性,与有机物接触能燃烧和爆炸,并放出有毒和刺激性的过氧化氮和氧化氮的气体。
亚硝酸钠有毒,半数致死量(大鼠,经口)180mg/kg [1] ,有传言说亚硝酸钠是致癌物质,但事实上亚硝酸钠并不是致癌物质,致癌的是亚硝酸钠在一定条件下生成的亚硝胺,在亚硝酸钠分子中,氮的化合价是+3。是一种中间化合态,既有还原性又有氧化性,例如在酸性溶液中能将KI氧化成单质碘。
